أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilayh

I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Allah

When it is recited

Seeking forgiveness and turning back

What it means

The shorter of the two everyday forms. Astaghfirullah asks Allah to cover and forgive, from the root gh‑f‑r; wa atūbu ilayh — “and I repent to Allah” — names the turning back that the asking already implies. It is short enough to keep on the tongue without effort, which is why it sits among the everyday forms rather than the long ones.
